The OmniGroup announced its plans to release OmniFocus 2 and OmniOutliner 4 in the first quarter of 2013. Both are very welcome and some would say long overdue. In the last couple of years the group focused on developing the software for iPad and somewhat neglected the Mac platform. This is a pity because it is on the Mac where industrial strength of both apps is most needed. OmniOutliner – a great software for structuring writing, presentations and plans – needs smoother formatting, printing and export to different formats. OmniFocus – a great task management app – needs the ability to work with planning and time aspects of actions and projects (ranging from summary time estimates to the famous ‘forecasts’ which are a legend on iPad). It also desperately needs to integrate with simpler task lists such as Reminders or TaskPaper. I am sure there are these and many more features on the way. Looking forward!

OmniFocus 2 is delayed because of lots of issues: Mavericks release got in the way and required some changes to the code to take advantage of the new performance features (both OF2 and OO4 will require Mavericks for this reason), iOS 7 got in the way and required redesigns of all of their iOS apps, etc.
OmniFocus 2 may be out in mid-2014, if we are lucky.
OmniOutliner 4 is nearly ready for release. As of December 18th, 2013, the public beta “Release Notes” have the words: “4.0 Almost Ready!” in them.

I’m running that public beta and it’s a beautiful, stable and usable app. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s released sometime in these first 2 months of 2014.
Remember that anyone that buys OF1 or OO3 from their WEB STORE will get a free upgrade to the next version when it’s finally released.
